Excursion tips

The Hunsrück is located between the Rhine, Moselle, Nahe and Saar and is a forest-rich low mountain region in Rhineland-Palatinate, which with its varied hiking trails, deep forests and clear streams is a paradise for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation. The region is also rich in history, e.g. B. with the Celtic Ringwall near Otzenhausen, which was once an important Celtic fortification.

The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park covers about 10,000 hectares in the high altitudes of the Hunsrück and covers areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland. It is considered a “hotspot region for biodiversity” with old-wood beech forests, moors, rare animal species such as the wild cat and the black stork as well as diverse plant species. The park pursues the motto “let nature be nature” and is divided into zones in which nature is allowed to develop largely undisturbed in order to create a jungle of tomorrow.

On our homepage there is a map with many interesting excursion and experience tips:

Pets

Dogs are welcome in the dog-friendly rooms. In the house and on the premises (also in the forest) there is a duty of linen. More information and rules of conduct for dog owners can be found here.

House rules

The house rules are part of the booking and can be viewed in this guest folder under “house rules”. With regard to all guests, we ask for compliance.

Heating / Ventilation

The underfloor heating works energy-efficiently and reacts more slowly than classic radiators. Please do not adjust the temperature. If you change anything, keep in mind that a change is not noticeable until after about 24 hours.

The Schwollbachhof is a low-energy house (according to the standard KfW 55). The focus is first of all on the good insulation of the entire house. Both the facades and roof surfaces have been re-insulated with a thick layer of insulation. All windows were replaced and replaced with triple-glazed thermal protection windows. The heating of the house is completely provided by underfloor heating. For hot water supply, the water preheated by the heat pump is heated to the use temperature required for washing and showering. All rooms have ventilation systems in which the waste heat is used to heat incoming air again. The main source of heat is our air heat pump. As a power source, we use self-generated solar power from our photovoltaic system on the roof. In addition, the tiled stove on the ground floor provides a cozy room temperature. Since it has a water supply, a large part of its heat is led to the buffer vessels and thus supports the entire building heating.

This overall concept means for you as guests:

  • the stay at the Schwollbachhof is sustainable and climate-friendly
  • throughout the house there is a pleasant warmth from the underfloor heating

However, there are also specific characteristics of such a heating system, which may be new and unusual for one or the other of you:

  • The heating is sluggish, i.e. when it is warm in the room, it also cools down very slowly. Conversely, it takes a few hours until a cooled room is really warm again. The fast heating up is not possible
    >> please do not turn the heater completely down.
  • Because of the good thermal insulation, it is always necessary to ventilate well to avoid mold growth. Therefore, ventilation units are located in all rooms. Warm air is filtered out in the bathroom in a humidity-controlled manner. In a heat exchanger, incoming air is thus heated again.
    >> the opening of the windows for ventilation can be dispensed with; the ventilation can never be completely switched off. (Since they are extremely quiet devices, there is usually nothing to hear about it because of the diverse background noise.)
  • The room and bathroom have separate thermostat controls for the underfloor heating.
    >> If you can only sleep with the window open, we ask you to shut down the heating in the room and close the bathroom door.

Wood

Wood is a true all-rounder for us as

  • Raw material for home and furniture construction
  • Climate protectors by storing CO 2
  • Heat dispenser through cosy living climate and its fragrance
  • Storytellers through style and traces from earlier times

That’s why we used as much wood as possible:

  • Oak parquet floors
  • Furniture construction (mainly spruce three-layer plate)
  • special pieces of furniture (benches and lampers on beds made of own cherry tree)
  • window
  • Balcony construction (made of own Douglas fir)
  • House cladding (made of own Douglas fir)
  • Historical furniture

We have dispensed with chemical treatment. The surfaces are predominantly oiled and lightened a bit with white pigments. Wood is a natural raw material. He shows his individuality through astholes and sometimes cracks. When in humidity, it swells. Hard and sharp objects cause injury.

Now we have the great request to you as our guests to deal with it with care. Please avoid that

  • the floors, table tops and benches get wet – if you do, please wipe dry immediately
  • with hard or sharp objects to wound the material.

We and all subsequent guests will thank you.

When using wood, we were able to access family-owned forest. A good coincidence that a Douglas fir forest located just a few hundred meters from the house had to be scoured urgently. This gives the remaining trees more space and light. The felled trunks could be used well for the new balcony construction. For this purpose, they were peeled on site and installed by Herber. The remaining scouring wood was cut into boards in the sawmill. After a short drying time, they could be applied over the new thermal insulation as facade cladding. Thus, logs and boards made of their own Douglas fir wood characterize the new face of the Schwollbachhof. For all woods (including the windows) we have dispensed with all chemical wood protection. We accept that through sun and other weather influences, the wood will change its appearance in the natural process.
